he was in the bathroom washing his hands at the convention center when something pelted him in the side of the head. "what the---" he looked down at the floor where it had hit the tile with a tink! and saw a white ring with a peculiar symbol. rafe had bent over the pick it up and examined the item for a few minutes, brows furrowed as his head cocked from one side to the other, trying to place exactly where he had seen it before. two guys were talking and just about to leave the restroom when he called after them, holding the ring up, but neither of them said anything when he asked if it had been theirs. he assumed it was a toy that someone had lost, but he wasn't sure how he had gotten hit in the head with it. he had to be back at his table, having left it with a trusty neighbor to watch over it while he ran to get lunch and find coffee in the green room. once back, he nodded to the mid-40's gentleman with the balding scalp and thick black framed glasses. they had been neighbors at other conventions and got on relatively well. they had even purchased quite a lot of art from the other in the past. when the foot traffic had died down in the aisle they were in and he caught a few minutes of quiet time, rafe squeezed past the dividers and crouched behind the table, holding the ring up. "do you have any idea what this is?" he asked, twirling it between his tumb and forefinger. "i found it in the bathroom." in rafe's line of work, it was hard for him to be entirely clueless about it. rings were usually linked to green lanterns, but his general knowledge of them was limited to what few lantern-centric comics he had read and the one ryan reynolds movie. a white ring with that symbol didn't look familiar, but if he were going to find answers, he knew he was in the right place for it. "just looks like a lantern ring," the guy next to him said, taking it to look at it. "it's nice, though. real nice. 'lot nicer than the ones in the dollar bowl around the corner." handing the ring back to rafe, he put his focus on a browsing customer that had stepped up to the table. rafe stood and looked at it, curiosity forcing his brows to knit together between his eyes. "'ey, i'll be back. i gotta check somethin' out." before his neighbor could complain, rafe had shimmied between their tables again and took off. there was a booth with lantern rings in a bowl. different colors, possibly even as many as the rainbow. there was also a black one, but no white one. "hey, where'd ya get that?" the girl at the table asked, watching rafe holding the white ring up to one of the plastic green ones. "oh, i uh.. found it. in the bathroom. d'you recognize the symbol?" handing her the ring, he watched her look at it the same way he had, and the same way his neighbor had. "yeah. wow, it's nice. you found it? you wanna sell it?" there was a sort of devious sparkle in her eye, one that said she had found something she may have been looking for. there was a pause for thought while rafe considered it, unsure of whether or not he wanted to part with it right after he found it, but he didn't even know what it was. he knew he would get obsessed with it for a short period of time before letting it get lost somewhere back home and never seeing it again. "sure, why not. how much?" |
